BINF 5513 - Cybersecurity in Healthcare

Course Description

Technology has permeated every aspect of our lives, personal as well as professional. These
technology-based systems have become prime targets for many forms of malicious activity and
attacks. The foundational knowledge provided in this course will allow Health Informatics
professionals to better understand cybersecurity gaps that will need to be addressed to better
protect organizations against cyber threats.

Course Goals and Outcomes:

Goals

This course will provide a basic understanding of common cybersecurity concepts and explore
the implications for healthcare. After gaining an understanding of terms, concepts and the threat
landscape, mitigation strategies will be explored. The importance of securing different types of
assets will provide an understanding of the magnitude of efforts required. Examining current
events will provide a real-life look at prevalent threats. To wrap up the course, we will look at
resources available for ongoing threat mitigation and security awareness.

Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Identify and define common cybersecurity terms
• Explain common cybersecurity concepts
• Define basic threat landscapes
• Identify and define attack surfaces
• Explain the importance of physical security, with respect to data security
• Explain how social engineering is used to circumvent security controls
• Identify tools available for securing endpoints
• Explain the difference between perimeter security and zero trust
• Interpret mobile device security concerns, and identify common mobile device
management tools
• Identify threat and vulnerability databases and explain methods of accessing the same
• Discuss considerations for disaster recovery and business continuity
• Compare and contrast data recovery and forensics
• Investigate known compromises and explain breakdowns and mitigation strategies
