BINF5230 - Translational Bioinformatics: Biomarker Discovery & Personalized Healthcare

Course Description

This course is focused on computational techniques and statistical analysis of genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics data in application for drug discovery and translational research. The course seeks to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to approach and solve problems in genome, transcriptome and proteome analysis from a computational perspective using available databases and software. Such analysis is the foundation of biomarker used in personalized medicine and healthcare.

• Participation: Students are expected to logon to the course at least twice a week and participate in discussions. All students are encouraged to post comments, ask questions, and answer the questions posed by others.
• Assignments and Projects: The course provides several assignments and requires one course project, all to be completed and electronically submitted by the designated dates. Failure to do so may result in the loss of points.

Prerequisites

Basic concepts of first year Molecular Biology. Since this is a Web Based (00W) or On-Campus Enhanced (001) course employing Moodle as the course management system, the student should have access to the Internet, and should be familiar with the use of Moodle before proceed with course material and the discussion forum.

The course seeks to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of the translational bioinformatics, discuss the theory and practice of computational methods, and demonstrate the software tools & databases used in the field of translational bioinformatics analyses.

Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
• Describe the role of biomedical informatics in translational research.
• Describe the structure and importance of the biological databases
• Identify the appropriate database and retrieve necessary information from the database for various translational bioinformatics problems.
• Identify the appropriate software and carry out data analysis for various translational bioinformatics problems.
