CLSC7192 - DCLS Seminar II

Course Description
DCLS Seminar is a four-course series. CLSC 7192 is the second course in the series, taken the first semester of the DCLS clinical residency, and provides a mentored experience focused on refining oral presentation and consultative skills. Learning activities include participation in formal scholarly presentations and informal discussion on a variety of clinical laboratory science research topics and issues, critical review of the current literature, presenting on Grand Rounds cases, and participation as a member of the ASCLS Consumer Response Team. Students will plan and present formal presentations in a scholarly forum based on cases of interest from their clinical practice/residency experiences, literature review, consumer response experiences, and updates on their research.

Credits/Modes of Instruction
Credits:  1
Hours: 45 hours with an average of 3-4 hours per week for 12 weeks. Modes of instruction and course format may include questions for online discussion, critical thinking activities, directed study, Internet-enhanced reading assignments, and live webinar(s).

Prerequisites
Matriculation in the Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science Program (DCLS)
Completion of all DCLS pre-clinical residency courses and CLSC 7191
Approval for enrollment by the DCLS program director.
Fulfillment of residency requirements as outlined in “Section 18 Clinical Residency Requirements” in the DCLS Policy Manual.

Additional Requirements: Interaction with lab administrators, pathologist, clinicians and other healthcare professionals to explore select discussion question and assignment topics may be required.

Course Goals and Outcomes:
Goals
The goal of the DCLS Doctoral Seminar series is to assist students to develop and/or refine their presentation (oral communication) skills. This includes consultative skills, and presentation skills related to literature review/synthesis, defining and defending a research method, and presenting and interpreting research data. The presentations will focus on literature review on a clinical laboratory science topic or other related topic agreed to by the mentor and student; presentation of a case of interest from their clinical rounds experiences; a reflective paper on their clinical practice residency experiences; presentation and collegial discussion of current research project work completed to date.

Outcomes
Upon completion of the four (4) course Doctoral Seminar series, students will be able to:

Provide patient-centered, customized consultation services on appropriate test selection and interpretation for the purpose of clinical decision-making among the interprofessional healthcare team and for the patient. (IOM Core Competencies1: patient-centered care, interprofessional teams)

Provide consultation to consumers (patients and healthcare providers) related to clinical laboratory testing and laboratory test interpretation.

Monitor laboratory data, test utilization, and diagnostic testing processes for individual patients and populations using informatics and analytics to reduce diagnostic errors, improve efficiency, and reduce costs.

Compile, orally present, and interpret original research data to a scholarly audience for review and critique.

Conduct research and apply evidence to demonstrate clinical utility of laboratory tests and algorithms and to improve the quality, efficiency, and safety of the overall diagnostic testing process2.

Present orally, in a scholarly forum, and written format, an analytic critique of research literature on a selected clinical laboratory science topic or related topic.

Prepare a reflective paper on their clinical practice residency experiences.

Educate health care providers, patients, their families, and the general public on the indications, best evidence, patient preparation, and interpretation of clinical laboratory testing, including home self-testing.

Participate in a scholarly discussion and critique of peer presentations.

Demonstrate an understanding of the guidelines for authorship/ownership as well as those specific the student’s professional associations, journals, and conferences through written assignments and research project written requirements.

Participate in public and private health policy decision making at all organization and government levels using best evidence.

Complete at least one presentation to an audience that includes professionals external to Rutgers (i.e. at the clinical site, professional meeting/symposium). This requirement can be completed in DCLS Seminar II, II or IV. Students are encouraged to present at professional meetings and/or affiliate site interprofessional education sessions.
