DCYT5320 - Digital Pathology

Course Description

This course covers principles and theories associated with digital pathology practice. Topics include the digital imaging process, telepathology, image analysis, whole slide imaging, virtual microscopy and clinical and diagnostic applications of digital pathology.

Digital Pathology is offered as an elective course using web-based, online instruction. Coursework will be delivered solely on-line through the Canvas Course Management platform with asynchronous discussion. Occasional synchronous meetings for demonstrations may be scheduled. Assessments include discussion participation, lecture examinations, and critical analysis and synthesis of the literature. Students will spend 165 hours on the course. 80 contact hours of on-line instruction and demonstration over the 16-week period and approximately 85 hours devoted to readings, discussion board postings, lecture exams and graduate level written papers/projects.

Goals

The goal of the course is to provide students with foundational and theoretical concepts associated with digital pathology as well as its clinical and diagnostic applications.

Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

Discuss the principles and theories related to digital pathology, digital imaging and image analysis.
Differentiate between concepts of whole slide imaging, virtual microscopy and telepathology.
Describe the applications of digital pathology in bioinformatics and population health.
Discuss the diagnostic and clinical applications of digital pathology.
