DCYT5320 - Digital Pathology

Course Description

This course covers principles and concepts of companion technologies associated with digital cytopathology practice. Topics include digital imaging process, tele-pathology, locator guided computer assisted screening devices, digital pathology (telepathology, image analysis, whole slide imaging, virtual microscopy), clinical applications of whole slide imaging, digital pathology for educational, quality improvements, and specimen photography.

Web-Based

Digital Pathology will be offered as an elective using web-based mode instruction. Instruction will use power point presentations, Canvas discussions and remote demonstrations of various techniques. Class will be offered solely on-line with asynchronous discussion. Assessments include lecture exams, practical examinations on various unit topics and the development of a digital photography portfolio. Students will spend 165 hours on the course. 80 contact hours of on-line instruction and demonstration over the 16-week period and approximately 85 hours devoted to readings, discussion board postings, exam, writing, and portfolio preparation.

Goals

This course provides students with theoretical and practical applications in topics related to companion technologies and cytology histology correlation. The course examines principles and practices associated with surgical pathology grossing, ROSE, digital pathology (telepathology) and photography, locator guided screening, and electron microscopy.

Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Discuss the principles and theories related to digital pathology.
Demonstrate proper use and care of selecting digital photography.
Differentiate between Whole Slide Imaging and tele-cytology.
