Diagnostic Cytopathology - Entry Level
DCYT5340 - Cytopathology Seminar
 
Course Description
Cytopathology seminar provides discussion on contemporary topics and research in cytopathology and anatomic pathology. The course focuses on evidence-based methods and associated research methods. The course begins with an overview on principles of evidence-based research methods, qualitative and quantitative designs and systemic literature reviews. Ethics in research will be discussed as well as the role of the Institutional Research Board. Research methods commonly used in cytopathology (e.g. gynecologic, non-gynecologic practice to laboratory operations and companion techniques) and anatomic pathology will be stressed through readings and discussion of peer-reviewed research articles. Students will participate in weekly discussions where they will critically analyze the literature and provide written assessments of the quality of published peer-review research articles. quality of published. Students will prepare a live case study report and presentation involving developing a research study design, literature review and comparison of other cases in the literature. Concepts covered in the course are foundational to the development of the program's Capstone Project .

Students will participate in synchronous weekly online sessions of approximately 1.5 hours over the 12-week summer session. Other activities include article and other readings and discussion, mid-term exam preparation, article critiques and case study research assignment for approximately 100 hours of activities.

Goals
The goal of this course is to introduce diagnostic cytopathology students to concepts of evidence-based medicine and associated research study and design related to diagnostic cytopathology practice
 
Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain theoretical principles associated with evidence-based medicine
2. Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate the literature for pertinence and reliability
3. Discuss ethical practice in research and the role of the Institutional Review Board
4. Explain principles of qualitative and quantitative research methods and their respective study design
5. Develop a research proposal and conduct research leading to a case study report
