Course Description

This course provides an in-depth exploration of leadership and management principles specifically tailored for laboratory professionals. It focuses on key areas of organizational management, human resources, financial resources, and operational management within laboratory settings. The course is designed to equip laboratory leaders with the necessary tools and skills to manage teams, processes, and resources effectively while maintaining high standards of quality and safety in a clinical or laboratory environment

Credits/Modes of Instruction

Credits: 3

Web-based. Various active teaching/learning strategies and techniques will be utilized via Internet delivery of the course. Modes of instruction and course format may include posted lectures, questions for online discussion, critical thinking activities, directed study, Internet-enhanced reading assignments, and live webinar(s). Participants should anticipate spending approximately 135 hours on the course, or an average of 9-10 hours per week for 15 weeks including the final paper. Students are expected to be prepared for all class meetings, and it is essential that all students be prepared to contribute to class discussions and activities.

Prerequisites

Enrolled as a student in the MS Diagnostic Cytopathology or graduate-level CLMIS Programs. In addition, the course is open to non-matriculated students.

The goal of this Laboratory Leadership course is to equip laboratory managers and future leaders with a comprehensive understanding of the principles of management, leadership, and operations in the laboratory setting. The course aims to develop the necessary skills to manage people, processes, and resources effectively while ensuring the laboratory operates efficiently, maintains high-quality standards, and adapts to changing healthcare needs. By the end of the course, participants will have the knowledge and tools to lead teams, manage organizational change, make data-driven decisions, foster communication, and uphold safety and quality standards in laboratory environments.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Discuss and apply various management theories and practices in a laboratory setting.
2. Develop strategies for managing laboratory staff, communication, and organizational dynamics.
3. Implement efficient financial and operational management systems to ensure sustainability and quality in laboratory operations.
4. Lead and motivate teams effectively while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and safety.
