Rutgers SHP Requirements for Graduation and Course Descriptions

Department of Rehabilitation & Movement
Doctor of Physical Therapy
DPTG5141 - Cardiovascular and Pulmonary PT 1

Course Description
This introductory course will cover foundational and system specific knowledge, skills, and interventions relating cardiovascular anatomy and physiology to examination, evaluation, interventions, quality of life, and evidence-based practice for people without specific health conditions. Students will apply related terminology in verbal communication, documentation, [and interprofessional care coordination] to/for patients with singular movement system conditions and varying personal and sociocultural factors.

Credits/Modes of Instruction
Credits:  2
Lecture and lab.

Prerequisites
Admission to the DPT program.

Course Goals and Outcomes:
Goals
Goal 1. 7A The physical therapist professional curriculum includes content and learning experiences in the biological, physical, behavioral and movement sciences necessary for entry level practice. Topics covered include anatomy, physiology, genetics, exercise science, biomechanics, kinesiology, neuroscience, pathology, pharmacology, diagnostic imaging, histology, nutrition, and psychosocial aspects of health and disability.
Outcome 1. Interpret normal physiology of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems at rest and during exercise for community dwellers (e.g. normal EKGs, ABGs, PFTs) and recognize selected abnormal responses.
Outcome 2. Students will be able to accurately measure blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and rate of perceived exertion at rest, during activity, and in recovery and interpret the findings relative to patient presentation.
Outcome 3. Students will administer a V02 predictive test on the community dwelling population.

Goal 2. 7C The physical therapist professional curriculum includes content and learning experiences about the cardiovascular, endocrine and metabolic, gastrointestinal, genital and reproductive, hematologic, hepatic and biliary, immune, integumentary, lymphatic, musculoskeletal, nervous, respiratory, and renal and urologic systems; system interactions; differential diagnosis; and the medical and surgical conditions across the lifespan commonly seen in physical therapy practice.
Outcome 4. Students will be able to palpate all cardiovascular and pulmonary anatomy surface landmarks and relate that to underlying organs and musculoskeletal anatomy.

Goal 4. 7D19: Select, and competently administer tests and measures appropriate to the patient’s age, diagnosis and health status including, but not limited to, those that assess: a. Aerobic Capacity/Endurance c. Circulation (Arterial, Venous, Lymphatic) f. Self-Care and Civic, Community, Domestic, Education, Social and Work Lifer. Posture w. Ventilation and Respiration or Gas Exchange.
Outcome 5. Demonstrate proficiency in the examination of the chest (heart and lung auscultation, chest wall motion, posture, diaphragm excursion, ventilator muscle activity, cough effectiveness) and vasculature (edema, claudication pain, peripheral pulses).
Outcome 6. Demonstrate proficiency in functional and aerobic endurance outcome measures.
Outcome 7. Students will examine functional level based on standardized MET levels associated and calculate general activity level utilizing METs per week criteria.

Goal 5. 7D20 Evaluate data from the examination (history, health record, systems review, and tests and measures) to make clinical judgments.
Outcome 8. Students will be able to explain the effect of different postures on cardiopulmonary functioning.
Outcome 9. Students will interpret the findings of a V02 predictive test.
Outcome 10. Students will analyze the cardiovascular and pulmonary physiological benefits of positional based physical therapy interventions (including verticalization therapy, upper extremity positions to alter work of breathing, gravity assisted standing devices, and positioning to maximize ventilation and perfusion).

Goal 6. 7D27 Competently perform physical therapy interventions to achieve patient/client goals and outcomes. Interventions include: a. Airway Clearance Techniques
d. Functional Training in Self-Care and in Domestic, Education, Work, Community, Social, and Civic Life
g. Motor Function Training (balance, gait, etc.)
h. Patient/client education
i. Therapeutic Exercise
Outcome 11. Students will identify cardiovascular and pulmonary lines and tubes and accommodate the lines during patient mobility.
Outcome 12. Develop an aerobic exercise prescription for community dwelling population, incorporating MET levels and energy consumption, and make recommendations for improved wellness.
Outcome 13. Students will be able to apply techniques for improving flexibility and/or stability as needed to improve cardiopulmonary functioning.
Outcome 14. Students will be able to teach strategies for physical and mental relaxation.
