IDST3201 - Anatomy & Physiology I
Course Description
This course covers the structure and function of the human body from a body systems perspective. Specifically, A&P 1 reviews basic cellular function, the integumentary, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems. Students are expected to apply basic concepts of chemistry, biochemistry and cell morphology as it pertains to human physiology and to explain the interrelationships between the body systems to maintain homeostasis. The laboratory portion utilizes human cadavers to help the student identify and locate anatomical structures. Some dissection will be required. A minimum grade of “C” will be required in order to move on to Anatomy & Physiology II.
Credits/Modes of Instruction
Credits: 4
4 credits with a lab/ in-person instruction
This course is hybrid, with some of the didactic information delivered online (asynchronously and synchronously), and the labs held in-person. Efforts will be made to accommodate most students' schedule but some lab sessions may be held on Saturday mornings.
Prerequisites
Biology 1 and 2 preferred
Course Goals and Outcomes:
Goals
To teach the structure and function of the body systems and how they relate to each other to maintain health
Outcomes
Course Outcomes/Objectives:
1. Describe chemical reactions that occur in the body to maintain homeostasis
2. Review the function of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids and amino acids
3. Describe the life cycle of a cell and explain how dysfunction in the cycle leads to disease
4. Describe the structure and function of the integumentary system
5. Identify the bones and joints of the skeletal system and the biomechanics of movement
6. Describe the structure and function of muscular system and identify critical muscles for movement
7. Explain the anatomical and functional classification of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and special senses
