IDST5600 - Management and Leadership in Health Care

Course Description

The course provides an overview of management and leadership in health care. This web-based course covers the fundamentals of management and leadership as well as the application of such principles specific to the health care industry. An array of web-based resources and exercises, as well as a text and supplemental resources are used to cover related concepts.

Credits/Modes of Instruction

Credits: 3

This three (3) credit graduate-level, web-based course is delivered via the Canvas web platform. A host of resources related to the course content, structure and delivery can be found at the course “landing page” in Canvas. These include instructional information on navigating Canvas, the syllabus (course goals, objectives, grading, etc.), weekly module content, as well as assignments. Evidence of learning outcomes attainment shall be demonstrated by students’ achievement of an average grade of “B” or higher on weekly discussions, a mid-term and final exam, the final paper and other ad hoc assignments. Students can expect to spend 15- 20 hours per week on this course.

Prerequisites

This course is intended primarily for students who have matriculated within the Rutgers-SHP Master of Science in Health in Health Management (MSHM) program. The co-requisites are courses within the MSHM curriculum. Graduate level non-matriculated students may register for this course only with advance approval by the course instructor, Program Director or the Department Chairperson.

To introduce graduate students to the fundamental principles of management and leadership and the application of such concepts within health care organizations.

Outcomes

Distinguish between management and leadership and how each apply in healthcare.
Compare and contrast the concepts of management and leadership.
Identify and apply the value added by strong management and leadership.
Evaluate some of the major potential consequences to health care organizations of poor management and leadership; and apply concepts via case studies and assignments.

Analyze the major theories of motivation and their applicability in health care.
Apply organizational behavior theory to health care organizations.
Explain and demonstrate how strategic planning is an important aspect of health care management.
Evaluate and apply performance improvement tool in health care management and leadership.
Analyze and apply the value of information technology in leading health care organizations.
Describe and illustrate techniques for managing costs and revenues in health care organizations.
Evaluate the major aspects of health care financing and insurance reimbursement.
Demonstrate the value of strategic management of human resources and teamwork.
Evaluate and apply cultural competency and diversity in health care management and leadership.
Compare and contrast the relationship among ethics, law, and health care leadership.
Analyze and demonstrate the importance of addressing fraud and abuse in health care.
