IDST5700 - Law and Ethics for Healthcare Providers

Course Description

This course will provide students with an overview of the increasingly complex intersection of law, ethics and health care in the US. It will review the fundamentals of our legal system and aspects that impact major stakeholders with our healthcare system. Additionally, principles of jurisprudence and moral decision-making will be discussed.

Course Goals and Outcomes:

Goals

To present the role of the US legal system in health care, basic rights and responsibilities of the various stakeholders and the legal and ethical issues encountered by health care administrators.

Outcomes

1. Describe the interaction of the executive and regulatory agencies and the judiciary and legislative branches of government in the law-making process as it related to healthcare

2. Define legal terminology and concepts

3. Recognize and analyze legal and ethical issues as they arise in healthcare administration
Identify and analyze the basic principles of autonomy, confidentiality, veracity, role fidelity, justice, beneficence, and maleficence associated with ethical and legal issues in the healthcare environment

4. Differentiate among the various types of potential malpractice suits in healthcare

5. Describe strategies to reduce the liability of healthcare professionals

6. Discuss the ethical and legal arguments involved in the issues of withdrawing and withholding life support, organ donation, human subjects research, euthanasia, and genetic manipulation.
