IDST6231 - Mixed Methods Research

Course Description

Students will apply clinical reasoning skills to explore the determinants of health beyond the physical by taking a systems approach to understanding health and disease, and to explore occupational engagement in the community. The complexity of roles, advocacy, assessment, community capacity building, including consultation skills in community-based practice, are addressed.

Course Goals and Outcomes:

Goals

The goal of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the philosophy and epistemology of mixed methods research (MMR), the types of research problems they address, MMR research aims, core MMR designs, and applications when conducting MMR.

Outcomes

Students will:
1. Articulate a definition of mixed methods research.
2. Describe rationales for using MMR and the value of this approach.
3. Describe the philosophy and epistemology of MMR
4. Describe central features of MMR including timing, integration, priority, and inferences.
5. Describe perspectives on assessing quality in MMR as it relates to study planning, implementation, reporting and interviewing.
6. Apply the process of MMR and MMR study design components.
7. Develop a purpose statement and research questions for an MMR study.
8. Draw a procedural diagram for a MMR study.
9. Integrate quantitative and qualitative methods within a MMR design.
10. Apply the steps of designing an MMR study to a research topic of interest.

This course contributes to the fundamental knowledge and skills required to meet the following School Level Learning Outcomes:
1. Professionalism Outcome 3: Identify and evaluate the impact of culture and diversity on health beliefs, practices, and actions.
