NUTR6314 - Ethics, Professionalism & Leadership in Clinical Nutrition
 
Course Description
Course topics include the Academy’s Scope of Practice and Standards of Professional Practice to reinforce safe, current ethical and effective dietetics and nutrition services, legislative and regulatory issues at the state and federal level is addressed. The course allows the students to develop skills in and demonstrate formulation and analysis of professional opinions based on current research and evidence informed and evidence-based practice to guide clinical care. Approaches to leadership, debate and disagreement in the practice setting, practice management, negotiation and ethical decision making are addressed through debates, simulation, and roleplaying.
 
Credits/Modes of Instruction
Credits:  2
This two (2) credit graduate courses is delivered via a distance-based learning platform that relies heavily on completion of regular activities, assignments, and discussions of weekly topics. Students are expected to participate in weekly live face to face class sessions and course discussions as outlined in the Weekly Discussion section. Two-hour synchronous sessions occur
weekly.
 
Prerequisites
Matriculated status in the Entry-Level Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition is required.
 
Course Goals and Outcomes:
Goals
The goals of the class are to refine and guide practice skills in ethics, leadership and professionalism through teamwork, research and evidence-informed practice in current clinical topics, management dilemmas, regulatory and legislative issues and scope of practice usage.
 
Outcomes
The objectives of this course will be met via weekly face to face class sessions, distance-based seminars and discussions, required readings, clinical case studies, and presentations. Students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of legislative and regulatory activities, services, and roles;
2. Demonstrates leadership and critical thinking skills that guide practice;
3. Incorporate current research and evidence informed practice to make decisions;
4. Act in a safe, professional and ethical manner;
5. Demonstrate effective communication skills;
6. Describe approaches to practice management in various organizational structures.
