PSRT5030 - Statistical and Research Methods

Course Description

This course provides an overview of basic statistics and types of research studies and methods; research implementation and report development; program evaluation including needs assessment, outcomes assessment and consumer satisfaction measures, and research publication. Ethical and legal considerations in research are discussed. Applications to practice are emphasized.

Credits: 3

The mode of instruction is primarily lecture, but with opportunities for class participation in exercises, labs on SPSS, and class discussions. This course is offered in both on-campus and online formats.

Goals

A major goal of the course is for students to be knowledgeable consumers of research literature in the counseling field including having skills to review counseling literature critically, conduct library research for counseling related current information, understand basic statistics and research methods, understand outcome based research, and have knowledge of needs assessment and program evaluation. Students will also be aware of the ethical, legal and cultural issues related to research, and be able to apply research literature to practice issues such as choosing appropriate interventions, planning assessments, implementing meaningful program evaluation, performing outcome analysis, and conducting consumer satisfaction studies.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Discuss the importance of research in counseling as well as opportunities and difficulties in conducting counseling-related research;
Discuss ethical and legal considerations in conducting research.
Identify the uses of various research methods including quantitative, qualitative, single-case designs, action research, and outcome-based research;
Use technology and statistical methods in conducting research and program evaluation including basic SPSS;
Describe principles, models and applications of needs assessment, program evaluation, and how to use findings for program modification;
Assess counseling and related research to apply research to counseling practice;
Identify research concerns related to diversity and the implications of these concerns for conducting and interpreting research.
