Course Description

This course is designed to familiarize students with the goals, values and principles which underlie the philosophy and practice of the psychiatric rehabilitation (PsyR) approach. This course provides an overview of key topics in rehabilitation services for individuals with severe mental illness, including the key characteristics of the Evidence Based Practices (EBPs) that have emerged within the field. The course encourages students to become knowledgeable about current research in the field, critical elements of service delivery, and the role of clinical mental health counselors and other professionals in providing these services.

Credits: 3

The mode of instruction is primarily lecture, but with opportunities for class discussions. This course is offered in both on-campus and online formats.

Goals

With an emphasis on the evolution of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and mental health services as well as the etiology, course, and treatment of psychiatric disabilities, students will be provided with the skills and knowledge needed to define and describe the essential features of evidence-based and promising practices related to services for people with severe mental illness.

Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
Describe issues related to the etiology, course and treatment of psychiatric disabilities both in the historical framework as well as in current service provision.
Generate examples of the core goals, values, and principles that underlie psychiatric rehabilitation services and relate them to relevant Codes of Ethics.
Identify key components of a variety of models/services demonstrated to be evidence-based practices for people with severe mental illness including the role of the clinical mental health counselor.
Describe the relationship between diagnosis, stages of change, and mental health services.
Discuss professional issues related to providing services for people with severe mental illness in the context of clinical mental health counseling.
Describe the management and operation of mental health services and programs in areas such as administration, finance and accountability including strategies to improve services, and promoting client access to services.
Discuss models, methods, and principles of program development and service delivery for peer--directed and family services in the context of the range of mental health services.
Plan for the influence of multi-cultural concerns in service delivery.
Apply current literature to assess service effectiveness and modify services as needed including evaluating research about evidence-based practices, and developing measurable outcomes as part of program evaluation.
Identify relevant public policies that affect delivery of psychiatric rehabilitation services and develop effective strategies to advocate for or influence public policy.
