PSRT6024 - Counseling Children Adolescents Families and Couples

Course Description

This course is designed to help students gain the knowledge and skills required for working children, adolescents, and their families in different settings. The course emphasizes counselor behaviors that facilitate the helping process/therapeutic relationship with children, adolescents, and their families; focuses on the developmentally responsive use of various evidence-based interventions and the application of various family theories children, adolescents, and their families; and explores related multicultural and ethical issues. Marriage counseling will also be discussed.

Prerequisites

Completion of PSRT5323, Theories of Counseling and Personality, and at least 12 credits in the master's program.

Course Goals and Outcomes:

Goals

The goals of the course are to:
1. Develop an understanding of family systems theories
2. Apply family systems theories to family and couples cases
3. Develop skills in providing culturally aware services to children, adolescents, couples, and families
4. Apply knowledge of human development to intervention selection when working with children, adolescents, couples, and families
5. Apply theories of counseling to work with couples

Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate skill in selecting and implementing various interventions from the family systems theories
2. Obtain and integrate information to develop an intervention curriculum to assist children, adolescents, or families
3. Demonstrate proficiency in conceptualizing cases via a family systems theoretical approach to counseling
4. Demonstrate the understanding of trauma-informed care as a lens to utilize when working with children, adolescents and families
5. Discuss legal and ethical issues as it pertains to work with children, adolescents, and families
