Assistant Professor  June 10, 2021 Annette Backs, PhD, LCSW, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation where she teaches clinical mental health and vocational courses in the MS Rehabilitation Counseling program. Dr. Backs specializes in online course design and teaching. Her research involves graduate-level online learning in order to make online learning more effective, meaningful, and engaging. She is the instructional designer and collaborative author for two interactive online curricula for interprofessional practice for Opioid Use Disorder as well as ten online courses for peer providers of mental health services. She is co-director of a 3-year $1.3 million Health Resources and Services Administration Opioid Workforce Development Program grant to develop and deliver interprofessional training to graduate students in rehabilitation counseling, advanced practice nursing, and social work. Previously, Dr. Backs was the Director of Curriculum Development and Director of Consultants in Behavioral Health at the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at the University of Chicago, where she spearheaded the development and implementation of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Certificate Program. Dr. Backs also has extensive experience as an interactive staff trainer and consultant in state psychiatric hospitals, community mental health centers, and residential facilities in Illinois and New Jersey. Since 1993, Dr. Backs has presented training and consulted nationally and internationally to assist social service and mental health programs in their clinical programs, development of program evaluation plans, and outcome-based program planning.
