Title Details
Matt  January 16, 2026 Matthew McQuillan, DMSc, PA-C, DFAAPA is a clinician and educator whose work is grounded in a humanistic approach to medicine and education—one that emphasizes presence, dignity, and thoughtful engagement in moments that matter. Since joining the faculty in 1998, he has been committed to developing physician assistants who are clinically prepared, ethically grounded, and attentive to the human experience of illness and care. As an Associate Professor in the School of Health Professions and Chair of the Department of PA Studies and Practice, Matt’s leadership reflects a belief that strong programs are built not only on standards and outcomes, but on mentorship, faculty development, and respect for the people who teach and learn within them. His service at the state and national level has focused on accreditation, program quality, and advancing PA education in ways that balance rigor with humanity. Matt most recently served as Chair of the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), following multiple terms as a Commissioner and Site Visitor. He has also contributed extensively to the work of the Physician Assistant Education Association, particularly in faculty development. His professional service includes leadership as Past President of the New Jersey State Society of Physician Assistants and advocacy through legislative initiatives that support the profession. A Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of PAs, Matt is also a recipient of the School of Health Professions Excellence in Teaching Award, recognition that reflects his commitment to teaching that is both rigorous and compassionate. His clinical experience spans cardiothoracic surgery, family and urgent care medicine, and occupational medicine. He currently supervises Rutgers PA students at the student- and faculty-run HOPE Clinic in Plainfield, New Jersey, where education, service, and humanistic practice intersect in meaningful ways. Matt earned his bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts, with a minor in Business Administration, from St. John’s University in New York. He completed both his BS and MS at Rutgers University and earned his Doctor of Medical Science degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.
